The 2012 Summer Kick Off theme will be Mardi Gras. This year’s necklace is loaded with Mardi Gras colors and themes. Attendees this year will learn about local waterfowl, boating safety, and Cobb Island in the 1940’s. Participants in this year’s Scavenger Hunt will have an opportunity to find more handmade limited edition beads than ever before. Beads of special note in 2012 include the Mr. Wilson bead and the Change of Watch (COW) bead. For the second year in a row, the Bead Master has authorized a special bead acknowledging one of our guests from the previous year.

In 2011 “The Ralph” was commissioned to pay homage to our friend who got creative making his own flamingo bead in 2010. In attendance last year was our friends who brought the cutest dog, Mr. Wilson. The Bead Master has created a limited edition handmade and hand painted Mr. Wilson bead. The COW bead is only available at one of two events. It will be attached to invitations to be handed out at the January 21 Potomac River Yacht Clubs annual Change of Watch (COW) Ball. It will also be available for attendees at the March 3 joint Swan Point and Cobb Island Commodore’s Ball. After that, the mold will be broken forever. Who knows………if you’re attending this year and make an impression on the Bead Master, you too, could have your very own bead in 2013. Registration forms for the 2012 CIYC SKO should be available on line by March 1.

The Cobb Island Yacht Club Invites You to Join us for the 2012 Boating Season

It’s hard to believe the pirates and scallywags from last year finally left our tranquil little Island. This year’s event should offer a little less scary theme since the Crystal Skull emanations appear to have receded. (See also the report from the 2010 SKO participant who brought back a crystal skull from the Far East (DUBAI) and had it disappear the night of her arrival on the island amid a strange green glow). Her story had such force the Commodore gave her a “Commodore’s bead” for sharing it with him. This year Barbara and I launched the Island Swan. Our new Great Harbour N37 Trawler which causes me such stir in me breast that I am bursting with a song for all of you to sing with the band Saturday night.

Sung to the music of Gilligan’s Island here goes:

Just sit right back ……..And you’ll hear a tale

A tale of a fateful trip…….That started from the Isle of Cobb,

Aboard the Island Swan.

The mate was a mighty sailin’ gal, the Commodore brave and sure, Five Bridge members set sail that day, for a three hour tour…A three hour tour.

The Potomac started getting rough……..the tiny ship was tossed.

If not for the courage of the fearless crew…The Swan would be lost.
The Swan would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Billigan,

Don Thayer too,

Karen B and her mutt,
Lane McGee.,

there’s Roger and Martha C.,

Here on the Billigan’s Isle……………………………

I wonder if Simon Cowell will actually be at Scuttlebutts on Saturday night. I could be the next PRYCA IDOL., but then Barbara tells me that I started the Whiskey tasting too early. Either way, we look forward to seeing you at the 2011 CIYC Summer Kick Off.

TA!

The wait is over! Every year, PRYCA members wait for the unveiling of the Cobb Island Yacht Club (CIYC) Summer Kickoff Scavenger Hunt Necklace. This year’s unveiling was held at CIYC’s Bridge meeting in February. Unanimously, the CIYC Bridge approved of this year’s Scavenger Hunt necklace, event schedule, and theme “The Tail of the Osprey”. This year’s hunt will include themes such as patriotism, memories of the 1920s-1930s in Southern Maryland, Prohibition, and our favorite bird of prey…..the Osprey. As you look at the necklace pictured you will note that there are many new limited edition handmade beads to collect. Remember, those of you lucky enough to have attended the PRYCA COW in January, have already received your first handmade Sand Dollar bead for your necklace.

The 2011 CIYC SKO plans currently include the following:

Meet and greet at Captains hour. Dress is casual. We are encouraging everyone to wear their yacht club T-shirts.

The Best Dressed Boat contest’s theme is “Patriotism”.

This year, we have a new glass bead inspired by one of our boat-in visitors from last year. It is the famous Florida Bird of prey known as the “Ralph”.

Boat Inspections will be performed that day by the Power Squadron. This is also a great educational experience for the kids!

View an 18th century stained glass angel whose origins are laced with heavenly urban legends.

History of Southern Maryland’s struggle with Prohibition and our famous Rye Whiskey

“White Lightening” tasting.

Calm seas will allow participants to watch the banding of a resident Sea Hawk family, or as they are more commonly known, Osprey.

Captains and their crews will be challenged with our local “Rum Running” course. While knowledge of watercraft navigation is helpful, this course has been designed for the most inexperienced crews. No need to bring your dinghy’s ashore, they will be provided for you.

For your entertainment we have a band that will allow the closet musicians and singers in the PRYCA to perform and show off their talents. Bring your instrument if you have one!

Annual Cobb Neck King/Queen Crab Cook Off. Entering and wining the contest is the only way to win the coveted “Jeweled Crab Bead.” Nine contestants will submit their favorite Blue Crab dishes for tasting as each contestant vies for the best crab dish in the Cobb Neck area. Should any PRYCA member wish to submit their dish for consideration on that day, please contact Linda Riggs, owner of the Cobb Island Gallery and Coffee Shop. The field of entrants is limited to nine applicants on a first come basis beginning on April 1, 2011. Interested applicants should contact Linda directly at lindariggs@comcast.net or write her at Linda Riggs, P.O. Box 70; Cobb Island, MD 20625. Note this event is also a fund raiser for the local food bank and donations will be $8.00 per person.

Pig Roast

Kayak adventure with our local naturalist. Make sure to bring your Kayaks for this adventure.

Please consider joining the CIYC in “The Tail of the Osprey”, an adventure in Island heritage, navigational skills, and the life of the Osprey. Registrations have already begun. For a copy of the registration form, click here. We look forward to meeting many new friends and renewing past friendships at this year’s event.

2011 Change of Watch

Ahoy there! We hope you’re enjoying the new CIYC webpage! There’s a lot going on, and it’s highly suggested you cruise through the various links off to the right (below the Pages title), to get a better idea of what content is available or possibly point out to the webmaster (cobbislandyachtclub@gmail.com) what might need adding!

On January 22, 2011, the Potomac River Yacht Clubs Association hosted their annual Change of Watch event at the Hilton in Springfield, Virginia. This event had a variety of different activities, starting in the Hospitality room with plenty of refreshments for everyone. This led to the cocktail party in the Hilton’s main Ball Room. After consuming delectables, the Master of Ceremonies, PC Phil Bolin, called everyone to station to introduce the incoming Bridge to begin the evening’s events. The events included:

Dancing

Main course meal

Music and entertainment

A final toast in the hospitality room

Bead-Maker Chris was also able to hand out the information linked here, along with the official 2011 CIYC Change of Watch bead.

Stay tuned for more CIYC information.

Happy boating!
